Symbols used in VSM are quite different from the usual Flowchart Process Map that you might be familiar with.
These are the most basic symbols necessary to Create a VSM although more symbols exist which may be used based on the situation.
Here is a brief about each symbol:
Customer / Supplier: This symbol is used where ever the external Customer or Supplier needs to be shown in the Value Stream Map.
Process Box: This is used to document function, steps, activity, department. Take a careful look at the data below this box. This is what makes a VSM different from usual Flowchart. It help us document data or metrics relevant to the process.

Pull Arrow: Pull Arrow is used when the process in the downstream pulls the material or information based on actual requirement of the external customer. In other words, upstream process does not push the product flow. It avoids creating waste in the processes.
Push Arrow: Push is opposite of Pull. Generally Push production creates overproduction and inventory in the value chain leading to create more problems in the downstream.
Electronic Communication Flow: This symbol is used when some electronic communication system such as email, software, etc. is used between different functions or processes.
Manual Communication Flow: This symbol is used when communication happens manually between different functions or processes. This may be verbal communication, telephonic, etc.
Queue: Use this symbol between different processes or functions or activities where delay happens and product or information remains in queue to be process. This causes delay in the entire Process.
Timeline: This helps track and calculate the total lead time vs Value Added Time in the Value Stream. Timeline is seen at the bottom of the Value Stream Map below the process boxes.
