Most of the time people like you and me stay confused whether the efforts we are making in our work worth earning enough or not. Imagine you are working on completing a report and you end up calling one or more people for details, walking to other departments, waiting for your PC to get repaired if it goes down, waiting for email from someone, and so on. When you are through with the report and take a deep breath in a happy mood go to the person with your report for whom you were preparing it. To your surprise instead of appreciating your hard work the person finds tons of mistakes and asks you to correct them as fast as possible. Now disappointed you go back and start all over again with lower energy levels and at the back of your mind thinking about the person why (s)he couldn’t tell you all this before you started your work first time. This will bring down your motivation level, chances of growth, chances of increase in income and so on.
Now think of how many times you or your colleagues and friends face similar situation whether in job or business. And you fail to find the answer where went wrong that drained your energy levels and badly affected your productivity and motivation.
Here are the 3 Lean Rules if You understand and follow every time while working on anything, you will feel better, motivated, chances of growth and income will improve.

While following these 3 rules think of all the activities or steps you take no matter how minute they are while performing your work. Remember the word activities. Focus on your activities.
The 3 Rules are:-
1. Your customer should be willing to pay: This means whatever activity you are performing or steps you are following to complete a job. Think from your customers’ perspective. Imagine if the customer is right next you and you ask him the question “would you pay me for what I am doing right now?”. If the answer is no. Just eliminate that particular activity from you entire process. The customer may be external who actually buys your product or service or internal may be another person or department in your company.
2. It should change the fit, form or function: The activity should change the fit, form or function of the product or information travelling through your process. If you are moving papers or material from one place to another you do not meet this criteria. If you bring tools or required material from somewhere away from you workstation you don’t meet this criteria.
3. It should be done Right the First Time: If you have to do same work again, as you did in case of preparing report all over again based on the feedback of the person for which you prepared this report, you don’t meet this criteria. If you correctly complete your work in the first time you meet this criteria. If you have to rework due to any reason its not going to bring more money to you. Simple. How many times you or your team have to re-work during your work.
Take some time to brainstorm all your activities alone or with your team or colleagues and try to answer why your hard work doesn’t get recognized. And then try to follow the above mentioned rules while working. you will find amazing answers.
